Should You Ever Wear A Costume To An Audition?

You’d be surprised how many times I get asked this question: should you ever wear a costume to an audition?
And I get it – if you get an audition where you need to be someone who wears a particular outfit (like a policeman, fireman, etc.) you might feel pressured to get that particular outfit.
But I promise you, this is not necessary. Well… most of the time.

Should actors ever wear costumes to auditions? Well…
So the short answer is: NO! DON’T WEAR COSTUMES TO AUDITIONS! YOU WILL LOOK CRAY!
The long answer is: NO! DON’T WEAR COSTUMES TO AUDITIONS! … except when casting asks you to wear something in particular, like a lab coat or a certain color shirt.
Our social media director, Evin Michaels, just told me recently he had another audition where he was told to dress like “Cupid”. That was the only note. So in this case, you do what you can, and you make it work. Remember – casting doesn’t expect you to come in full wardrobe; this is just an after all!

Had an HBO audition several years ago for a part of satanic leader. After listening to a much less experienced actor, who was booking a lot more than I, I took his advice and went in costume (dress suit) with hair and face make-up, much more than your ‘stach in the above pic. After getting there the assistant told me they eliminated that role. Since then I’ve followed your DON’T WEAR COSTUMES TO AUDITIONS!
